PESCO History
Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) is a government-owned public service that falls under the management of the Pakistani government.
It was once a part of the Power Wing of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and is headquartered in Peshawar.
PESCO is responsible for providing electricity to more than 4.4 million consumers across all districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) was established in 1958 through the WAPDA Act of 1958. Before this, electricity supply services in Pakistan were managed by various organizations, both public and private, in different regions.
The distribution of electricity at the local level was handled by different WAPDA regions. In 1982, the Area Electricity Board (AEB) Peshawar was established as part of the Area Electricity Boards scheme, which aimed to give more independence and representation to provincial governments, elected representatives, industrialists, farmers, and other interest groups in the functions of AEBs.
The Peshawar Area Electricity Board was later transformed into a corporatized entity known as the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) on March 22, 1998, following the restructuring of the Water and Power Development Authority.
